How AI predicts what your child will look like

The model isn't doing genetics. It picks up features from two uploaded photos — eye shape and set, the line of the nose, the oval of the face, skin and hair tone — and blends them into a face where both people are recognizable. It's a visual blend, not an inheritance calculation: the result answers "what might a child of these two look like," not "what will the child actually look like."

That's exactly how to treat the result: a charming guess worth a smile, not a forecast. Run the same two photos twice and you'll get two different faces — both plausible, because there are genuinely many ways to combine the features.

Why one result isn't enough

A single generated portrait always looks convincing, and that's the trap. Generate four or five and look at them side by side: the features that repeat across variants are the real overlap between the two faces. Everything else, the model filled in on its own.

What affects the quality of the result

Generating a child from parent photos is more sensitive to your source images than to how you phrase the prompt.

Set the age and gender explicitly

"Make a child" defaults to a baby, and likeness barely shows on a baby's face — the features haven't developed yet. It's more useful to ask for an age where the features actually read: five to seven years old, or a teenager. Same with gender: "what would a daughter look like" and "what would a son look like" produce noticeably different results, and it's worth asking for each in a separate run.

How to get likeness, not just "a cute kid"

The most common complaint about these generators is that the result is pretty but looks like a stranger. The reason is almost always the same: by default the model pulls the face toward an averaged prettiness, and individual features dissolve into that average. The fix is in the prompt.

Spell out in words what should carry over: "keep the mother's eye shape and the father's nose," "dark, thick eyebrows like in the second photo," "freckles." The model holds on to a feature you name explicitly far more reliably than one it has to guess from a photo. The same goes the other way — say what shouldn't be there: "no makeup," "no skin retouching," "natural light, not studio."

The second trick is working in iterations. Got a version where you like the nose but not the eyes? Ask for just the eyes to change, keeping everything else. Step-by-step edits get you a far more recognizable result than ten generations from scratch.

How long it takes

Generating a child from parent photos and getting one version takes less than a minute. Getting to a result you'd actually show the parents usually takes fifteen to twenty minutes: three or four runs, picking the best one, two or three detail edits. It goes faster when you've picked your source photos ahead of time and don't have to go hunting for them mid-session.

Beyond the main scenario, the same approach is used to recreate family resemblance across generations: upload a photo of a grandmother as a young woman next to a photo of her granddaughter and see what carried over. Limitations worth knowing upfront

The model doesn't work with medical traits and shouldn't be used as anything beyond entertainment. It doesn't guarantee likeness and has nothing to do with actual heredity. One more thing, about other people's photos: don't upload pictures of people who don't know about it — it's their image, not yours.

If the result doesn't look like either parent, the source photos are almost always the reason, not the model: check that both faces are shot straight-on, in even light, at a decent resolution, and try again. Getting it right on the first try is rare — expect three or four runs with some prompt tweaking along the way.
