How to Identify a Car from a Photo
The need for this comes up more often than you'd think: you liked a car in a parking lot, you need to identify a vehicle from a dashcam clip, or it's just a bet with friends. It used to take a forum thread — now it takes one photo.
What Gives a Car's Model Away
The front end. The grille and headlights are the most distinctive design elements, and manufacturers change them from generation to generation, which makes them the most reliable way to identify a car. After that comes the silhouette: the roofline, the shape of the rear pillars, the proportions of the overhangs.
That's why the best angle is a three-quarter front shot: it captures both the face and the profile. A straight side shot works worse — sedans in the same class look almost identical in profile.
Generation and Year
Narrowing it down to a generation usually works, sometimes even to a facelift — manufacturers change the lights and bumper partway through a model's run, and it shows. But no one can name the exact production year from a photo: cars within the same generation look identical from the outside, and the year lives in the VIN, not the body.
Common and Rare
Mass-market models from the last fifteen years are identified with confidence. Classics, low-volume models, and cars from markets you're not familiar with are harder — the answer will come back as a few candidates with an explanation of what's shared and what's different.
Not Just the Whole Car
From the same photo you can also ask about a single part: what that component is, what it's called, what it does. That's handy when you need to explain a problem to a mechanic or find a part without knowing its name.
