Is Midjourney Free on Discord? What You Actually Get Today

Is Midjourney Free on Discord? What You Actually Get Today

Short answer: no. As of November 2026, generating images with the official Midjourney bot on Discord requires a paid plan, and the same goes for Midjourney's own website. There is no permanent free tier, and a free trial is only available when Midjourney opens one.

If you need only a handful of images, you have two legitimate options. You can subscribe to Midjourney for a month, or you can pay per generation through an aggregator. On Moleculs you can use Midjourney online without Discord for 21 credits per run, with no separate Midjourney subscription.

Short answer: Midjourney is a paid service, on Discord and on the web

Midjourney started as a Discord bot. It now also has a web app at midjourney.com where you write prompts, browse results and organise images without joining a server. Both use the same account and the same subscription.

Moving from Discord to the web doesn't make anything free. A guide that says otherwise is probably out of date.

What happened to the free trial on Discord

For a while, new users got a small batch of free generations in Discord. Midjourney later closed that open trial. Since then it has come back only occasionally and for short periods.

To check the current status yourself:

  • Sign in at midjourney.com and look at the plan or subscription screen. If a trial is open, it shows up there.
  • Read the announcements channel on the official Midjourney Discord server.
  • Ignore third-party "how to get Midjourney free" posts that are more than a few months old.

If none of these mentions a trial, there isn't one.

How the Midjourney subscription works

Midjourney sells monthly and yearly subscriptions in several tiers. The tiers mostly differ in:

  • how much fast GPU time you get each month
  • whether you also get slower "relax" generations
  • how many jobs can run at the same time
  • whether Stealth mode is included, which keeps your images out of the public gallery

Prices and plan names change, so we don't quote them here. Midjourney's official pricing page is the place to look.

Two things catch people out. Upscales and variations also use GPU time, not just the first grid. And on lower tiers, your images may be public by default, so check this before you upload anything private.

Is Midjourney free for students?

As of November 2026, we couldn't find an official student or education discount on Midjourney's site or in its documentation. "Student codes" on coupon sites don't come from Midjourney.

For a student, the real problem is a fixed monthly fee for irregular use. Say you need 15 images for a project this week and none for the next two months: most of the subscription pays for time you don't use. Do the maths before you subscribe. Count the images you need, add about 50% for retries, multiply by the price per run and compare that with one month of the plan.

"Free Midjourney" offers online: shared accounts, unofficial bots and fake generators

They come in three common forms:

  • Shared accounts. One login sold to dozens of people. This breaks Midjourney's terms, the account can be banned overnight, and everyone on it sees your prompts and images.
  • Unofficial bots in messengers that claim to have "Midjourney inside". You can't verify which model actually runs, and some vanish along with your balance.
  • "Free generator" sites that use the Midjourney name and ask for card details "for verification".

A mistake here costs you money and time. If you work with client material, it can also expose the references you uploaded. Quick check: does the seller name a legal entity, publish terms, and explain where generation happens? If any answer is no, walk away.

Using Midjourney through an aggregator: credits per run

In Moleculs, Midjourney is one of the image models. One run costs 21 credits, and you can attach up to 5 images as references. Credits come from your plan's quota, which refreshes each paid period. As of November 2026, the smallest paid plan includes 1,000 credits a month, which works out to about 47 Midjourney runs. The free plan's 5 credits don't cover a single Midjourney run. Plan details are on the pricing page.

One limit to know before you start: the model's settings and wrapper may differ from Midjourney's own app. Don't assume Discord parameters like --ar or --stylize behave the same way. Describe aspect ratio and style in plain words, then check the result.

Since each run costs 21 credits, write the prompt before you press send. This frame works well:

Subject: what is in the frame, one main object
Setting: where it is, time of day, weather
Light: source and colour of the light
Style: medium or look (photo, film, illustration)
Composition: framing, angle, aspect ratio in words
Avoid: what must not appear

Filled in:

Subject: a cat asleep on a cushion in a reading nook
Setting: by a rainy window at dusk, stacked books around
Light: warm lamp light, cool blue from the window
Style: cinematic still, soft film grain
Composition: wide shot, eye level, horizontal 16:9
Avoid: text, logos, extra animals

You can run a ready-made version of this prompt in Midjourney and compare. Check four things in the result: the subject is right, the light matches, there are no broken hands, paws or random letters, and the framing is what you asked for. If something fails, change one line of the frame, not the whole prompt. Otherwise you won't know what fixed it.

How to test an image model cheaply before you pay

This plan keeps the spending small and gives you a fair comparison:

  1. Draft the prompt in text (1-2 credits). Draft and refine your prompts with a text model first: ask it to fill in the frame above for your task. This step fits within the free plan's 5 credits.
  2. Run two cheap models (14 credits). Send the same prompt to GPT Image 2.5 Flare and Nano Banana. If one already gives you a usable image, you may not need Midjourney.
  3. Score each image against the four checks from the section above. Write the scores down instead of trusting your impression.
  4. Run Midjourney twice (42 credits) with the exact same prompt.
  5. Decide. If Midjourney wins on mood and style but not on accuracy, use it for hero images and the cheaper model for everything else.

Don't change the prompt between models. Then you're comparing prompts, not models.

Which option fits you

  • Occasional user, a few images a month: pay per run. At 21 credits, ten Midjourney images use about a fifth of the smallest paid quota.
  • Student with project-based spikes: pay per run, budget with the formula from the student section, and do drafts on 6-credit models.
  • Regular creator making dozens of images a week in Midjourney's style: an official Midjourney subscription with relax mode may cost less over a month. Compare your actual run count with the plan price.
  • Product shots or realistic portraits: try an AI photo generator with a photorealism model such as Seedream v4.5 first.
